International airways have needed to cancel dozens of flights to and from Indonesia’s island of Bali, after a close-by volcano despatched a big ash column into the sky.

Bali is Indonesia’s high vacationer hotspot and is a well-liked vacation spot for Australian guests.

Airlines say it isn’t protected to fly

Activity on the volcano has disrupted flights at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai worldwide airport since eruptions started.

“Due to volcanic ash caused by Mount Lewotobi in Indonesia, it is currently not safe to operate to and from Bali,” Australian airline Jetstar stated on Wednesday.

“Volcanic ash poses a significant threat to safe operations of the aircraft in the vicinity of volcanic clouds,” stated AirAsia a number of cancellations have been introduced.

On Tuesday, authorities expanded the hazard zone to 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) as volcanic materials, together with smoldering rocks, lava, and scorching fragments of gravel and ash have been thrown as much as 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater on Friday.

Lewotabi volcano lively since late 2023

The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, located on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province — simply 500 kilometers (360 miles) from Bali — has been lively since late 2023.

Multiple eruptions from the 1,703-meter (5,587-foot) volcano in current weeks have killed 9 folks and injured dozens extra whereas forcing the evacuation of greater than 11,000 folks.

Indonesia — which has near 130 lively volcanoes — is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is essentially the most geologically lively zone on Earth.
