Pride Flag Reinstated at Stonewall After Removal

Pride Flag Returns to Stonewall After Removal

NEW YORK – A large Pride flag was re-hoisted over the Stonewall National Monument Thursday by New York officials, following its removal earlier in the week. The act is viewed as a response to the Trump administration and prompted hundreds to gather in Lower Manhattan.

  • Stonewall is considered the birthplace of the modern U.S. gay rights movement.
  • The flag’s initial removal was perceived by some as an “act of violence” against the LGBT community.
  • The Department of Interior declined to comment on potential further removal.
  • The DOI spokesperson called the return a “political stunt.”

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal led the ceremony.
