Supreme Court to Re-Examine “Industry” Definition Under Industrial Disputes Act
New Delhi – A nine-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court will commence hearings on March 17th regarding the definition of “industry” under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. The court is addressing the complexities and conflicting interpretations that have arisen over the years.
- Written submissions are due by February 28, 2026.
- The court will consider the correctness of the test laid down in the Bengaluru water supply case.
- The bench will examine the legal impact of the Industrial Disputes Amendment Act, 1982.
- The court will also debate whether social welfare schemes constitute industrial activity.
